Idemitsu's
first video installation, Grandmother, Mother , Daughter, was produced in
1976. In the work, three generations of the Idemitsu family, the artist's
mother, older sister and niece play freely with cigarette cartons.
These actions were documented on video, and as she showed the video to others,
Idemitsu filmed the viewers to see if that person's way of playing with
cigarette cartons would change. The result is that three people appear on
three monitors simultaneously.
In this work, one of made to realize the features that are peculiar to video. By understanding the characteristics of the video medium (extended recording time which allows simultaneous viewing), Idemitsu came to realize that she could use video for her own expressive ends. This becomes clear in nothing what was written about the work at the time, "Make use of the documentary and the simultaneous nature of video to explore the female subconscious." According to a Jungian concept, it is possible to observe in human actions what is left unexplained by the conscious and the subconscious. To rephrase this more simply, the mind can be understood thorough action.
